A bee that doesn't sting
Exactly what is a drone? Let's start with the word 'drone'. It is a word for a male honey bee. If you hear the buzzing of a drone, you will immediately understand why this term was chosen. Although drones have not been widely popular for long, they have been around for quite some time. Initially, they were only used for military purposes, and just recently, they began to be available for everyone. Nowadays you will find drones of many different types and price ranges, from simple toy models up to advanced, professional devices.
The most popular drone for recreative and professional use is the quadcopter. It is equipped with
four propellers, and for that reason very agile and extremely stable. A quadcopter is relatively easy to control, and therefore very suitable for novices. Our shop offers mainly quadcopters. There are many different sizes, from the compact mini-drone to the advanced camera-drone. By the way, a mini-drone with a camera is also an option. Did you know there are also drones that do not fly, but drive? Okay, strictly speaking these are not drones, but robots. These robots offer more possibilities than flying drones. You can find several in our shop.
How long did you want to fly?
A quadcopter is powered by one or more motors. These are powered by a battery. The bigger the battery, the longer you can fly. Of course, you can always purchase more batteries in order to extend the flight duration. The simplest drones in our shop can fly up to 10 minutes at a time, while the more advanced models can fly for more than 20 minutes. Most of the batteries need one to one-and-a-half hours to charge. In order to make the right choice, it is prudent to carefully consider how long you want to fly your drone.
Control and connection
The steering of a quadcopter is done via a remote controller or via a smart device via a Bluetooth or WiFi communication with the drone. Sometimes you also have the option to connect a smartphone or tablet to a controller, so you can create a live camera or data connection. The models from our shop which are controlled by a remote controller, a controller is usually included. Per
model, it will clearly state this if it is the case. Some drones can also simultaneously be controlled with two controllers. One person controls the drone while the other person operates the camera. An important feature, which has to do with the steering system, is the maximum communication distance between the drone and the controller. There is a point when the connection is lost, this varies per model. Simple quadcopters for instance, have a range up to 100 meters, while more expensive models can stay in contact with the controller to up to several kilometers.
Camera-drones: HD recording
We already briefly touched the subject of the possibility to record film and photos from the sky. A camera-drone offers endless possibilities, that were unachievable for most people, until very recently. The possbility to film and take pictures is the most popular reason for buying a drone. Some drones have an integrated camera, while other models are equipped with a gimbal, a camera stabilizer. This allows you to attach a camera yourself. The quality of the recording differs per model, this is always specified clearly. The most advanced camera-drones can record in fantastic HD-quality. When a drone is equipped with a gimbal, the camera stays stable and level, even if the drone itself creates shocks and movements in the air. The camera is often remote controlled, so that you can choose exactly what is recorded or photographed.
An important feature of a drone is whether or not it is equipped with GPS. By using satellites, the position of the drone and its position relative to the pilot can be determined very accurately. This way you always know the exact location of the drone. Some models can be positioned at a certain spot in the air without moving. There are also quadcopters with an automatic return function. These drones can return to the pilot with the press of a button, or automatically detect communication loss with the controller, after which they return.
Make your choice!
Now that you hopefully have a good idea of what to look for, you can make a well-educated choice. Of course your budget is also a determining factor. The better the parts and performance of the drone,
the more expensive it usually is. It sounds logical, and that's exactly what it is. It is important to think about what you want to do with the drone, and what your minimal requirements are, and based on that pick the most suitable model. Whatever
drone you pick, you will certainly not regret it. Do pay attention not to get addicted to flying one.
